Does anyone know what the frame color was right out of the factory for 1982 F100?....I know we all paint them black now, but for some reason I don't remember the frame being black on my dads truck when it was new...maybe a gray? Ideas?
generally I would go with black as from the factory.
Ive seen evidence that some were painted body color even though people claim Ford never did that. For example my '56 has blue paint on the rusty frame in areas that paint would not get unless it was intentially painted. Ive been told it was overspray which its too thick to be overspray, not to mention it was inside channels that overspray wouldn't get. Then Ive been told its been repainted when car never has or ran over some paint. I find it very hard to believe that the car just happened to run over blue paint just like the color of the car.
So to put it in a nutshell its hard to say as I believe some were painted body color in some instances and some were just black. Generally black seems to be more common. way more common.
I gotcha...it's just my pickup has been in my family since it was new. And even my dad doesn't remember the frame being black. Even on the frame it almost looks like a grayish silver color that is flaking off. It sucks to get old, we just can't remember… LOL
Many of the trucks left with NOTHING on the frame other than stickers.
Others had a very light black coating, Others had waxy black coating called cosmoline.
They were Never color matched to the body
The frames on my son's 1984 F150 and my 1986 F150 are gray with very light surface rust. They almost look like they were primer only.
Is your radiator core support gray/primer as well?
If so, I *may* have discovered a pattern here. I posted a thread a while back asking about radiator core support colors. I have seen some that are black, some are gray, and others are body color. Trim level seemed to have nothing to do with it. Although the body color supports seem to only be in 1985 - 1986.
The frame on my 1985 F150 was painted black, and the radiator core support is also black.
Yes, the radiator core support [both vehicles] was originally gray, as well.
So, perhaps when these trucks were being built, some plants (mine was built in Minnesota) may have painted both the frame and core support black, while others plants may have used gray/primer for the frame and core support.
In that case, forget it. Maybe there wasn't a pattern at all.
Maybe there is a pattern. Might just be based off the factory where the trucks were built at. I have no idea where mine was built at but the DSO is for Houston though.
So what you're all saying is I have options… LOL… I'm pretty sure mine was gray, there isn't a speck of black on it. But I'm wondering if it was gray primer or some other kind of a gray color, I remember it being a little bit shinnier than just a primer... It also sounds like the early 80s up to 84 were probably gray and 85 and 86 or black?
Don't know if this helps or hurts, my '81 had a black frame. Came from Colorado.
My '86 has a dark, dark red/brown frame. Oh wait, that's just all the rust.
