i have a 1990 f150 5.8l with an e4od that is bad. i also have a 1987 f150 5.0l with an aod. both 4 wheel drive. can i put the aod in the 1990 without a lot of problems. changing things to make it work are not a problem, but is there any way it will absolutely not work. do the torque converters have the same number of bolts and pattern? any electrical issues to this conversion? just want to make it move again for hauling garbage and firewood and stuff.

Not as straightforward as you would think. I imagine the AOD and E4OD are different lengths, so that alone demands cross member swaps, drive shaft swap. That would get it mechanically in line, so to speak if the trucks are the same wheelbase measurement, as well as cab and bed lengths.
The wiring harness and computer are more than likely not compatible with one another so that will require using different wires and PCM.
Torque converters are definitely not the same.
TBH, it's not worth the trouble of doing the conversion. You're looking at a nightmare of a project to swap it. Go to a wrecking yard, get a pre-95 E4OD, plug it in and cross your fingers. Or, get your existing E4OD rebuilt.
The first question we have to ask is, what has brought you to condemn your current E4OD? This is a completely electronically controlled transmission, and it is often mis-diagnosed when not functioning correctly. Guys have replaced E4OD's only to find the new one has the same problem, because it wasn't the trans, it as an electrical input at fault instead. This may or may not be your case, but it's an important starting point.
thanks for the replies. i am pretty sure the e4od is shot.pulling a 30 foot stock trailer down the highway and heard ticking and grinding noises then lost all forward gears and rpm went up to 4000. now only has reverse.
