Hi all !!! I'm going to upgrade my F150 from AOD trans. to E4OD. I know I'll need a computer and wiring harnes that's ready but What I need Is some advise based on your experience about this tranny. What should do and what shouldn't do.
I am cerious, why would you want to put in the E4od trans? yes it is built tougher than the AOD, but since it is digital you have to find the proper wire harness for the whole engine and a computer that is right to run the engine, you have your homework cut out there. besides, the E4OD costs around 2000$ to have it rebuilt (a Art Carr heavy duty AOD capable of 700hp and towing 15000pounds is priced at 1900$ and comes with converter) and then you have to have your drive shafts shortend due to the E4OD being like 3" longer and weighs a ton more also!
I dont know this is just my opinon, but it just does not seem worth the trouble to swap to the E4OD unless you already had the trans handy
I can get an E4OD used/low milleage for about $500 W converter. I'm electronics technician so wiring and computer is not difficult just $400 more. I hate that way AOD shift betwen 2-3 and 3-4.
I had to change my drive shaft anyway because I'm upgrading to 4WD also.
I have seem a lot of post regarding to E4OD, so sometimes I think is this so popular or so bad?
since you are getting it cheap, then yeah go for it. A stock E4OD can take more abuse than a stock AOD anyways. As for a swap, i just dont see the point unless its all setup with parts. i mean if anything, you are putting a transmisson that is twice as heavy into your rig.
The pre-1995 E4OD had a s***pot of problems and is much more expensive to rebuild. Be sure the one you get is '95 or newer or has been rebuilt with the upgrades. If you are not towing near max weight, I don't see an advantage to changing transmissions.
Since the E4OD was an upgraded C6 it probably takes alot more HP just to turn it. You can upgrade your AOD alot cheaper and without the wiring nightmare by using Ford Racing Div's wide ratio gear kit and a stronger input shaft. Most of these parts are in a AR70W tranny which is the improved, electronic AOD. Good luck!

I do not understand what part is like the C6, please exsplain. i mean the E4OD is not vacume shifted, it uses electronics, and looks completly different along with have OD, I am cerious on what you mean
The E4OD is based on the C-6 but the AOD is based on the FMX, which is certainly no prize winner. The later E4OD/4R100 trannies are very durable and considerably stronger than the AOD. Either can be sucessfully upgraded with aftermarket parts.
FWIW Baumann Engineeriing makes a stand-alone controller for the E4OD which allows its use in vehicles which do not have a computer-controlled engine.
hmm interesting, if you guys dont mind my asking, what kind of computer program do you require to run the AOD-E? it definetly sounds like it has its advantages.
The transmission control program is burned into the EEPROMs in the Powertrain Control Module (PCM.) It doesn't run on a "computer" per se. The same is true for the E4OD/4R100 or the AOD-E/4R70W.
Well, thanks ALL for your comments. The tranny I'm getting is obtained froma E150 - 1991 it seems I'll need some upgrades, can someone tell me what should I change?
My idea to change to E4OD is 1° my actual AOD has some shift problems and I think early it will need a mayor repair. 2° I love comfort of E4OD and I can program it as I like. 3° I always preffer electronic controllers, because I can take care about any problem.
By the way, Baumann controller is what I pretend use to control my E4OD.
