06 Expy EB Towing

Hey guys, just joined the forum.

So I had to sell my 2011 Dodge Ram 1500 with the Hemi. I was using it to tow a 24' Gulfstream Innsbruck TT. It's dry weight is 4100lbs and loaded for a week it's about 5500. I've always been a Mopar guy, but I only have about $5k to spend. I started looking at 2005-2007 Durango's, but as much as I love Dodge, I freely admit that year Durango looks like crap and the interior looks like a plastic factory melted. I went and looked at a 2006 Expedition Eddie Bauer (with the tow package) with 185000km on it. I really like the interior and I like the clean exterior. I just have no experience towing with a Ford. I have a really good weight distribution hitch with integrated sway control and I'm buying a brake controller. Thanks for the help!!

First up I'm not a Ford fanatic.

Second I have an 01 expedition that would easily tow that without thinking twice with the factory hitch. It's well within its tow rating and I've towed much more than that. You'd be just fine.

Better if the air suspension has been swapped out for regular suspension in my experience and seems to be the general consensus (search is your friend on this one, I'm not an expert)

I love my O4 EB but I am a ford fanatic

Make sure that it's never blown a spark plug out of the head.

That's the only thing that is frightening me about the 5.4, is there anyway to tell other than service records?

Not unless you pull the plugs as far as I know and of course that increases the risk of it happening.

Funny thing is Ford says there is no such issue that the design is sound and they still make it with the same flaw. Yet they have special tools and recommendations for when it happens. Those idiots always refuse to take responsibility for anything but I digress.

Anyhow that scares the bejeezus out of me with mine too but so far so good. Though I've only put about 6 thousand miles on it about a year and a half.

My daily driver will tow anything but it's restricted by road, license, etc. Of course it weighs in at over 20k pounds too.

For that price I'd pull the trigger. 99s are going for 5 grand out here for non eb editions.

I think you are twisting two issues together. The plug blow out was because of too few threads in the head, which was corrected, not sure of the year, but someone here can probably chime in. Definitely fixed by 06. The other issue is the plugs breaking during removal, for which they have a removal tool and haven't done much to address the issue.

How do these trucks pull? I'm coming from something with over 400lb/ft. The 5.4's are close to 300 correct? I know it won't tow like my old truck did, i just don't want to feel like I'm holding up traffic.

2 separate issues for sure but they seem to usually go hand in hand. I know it was supposed to be officially fixed but as I've discovered from talking with people it has never been resolved. At least that's the consensus I've heard from the people who've had it happen.

Barfing out of the cylinder and breaking off because it is stuck in the cylinder couldn't be more at opposite ends of the spectrum IMO. I think if you read through the barfing issue threads here you won't find that it has continued after the design change. Doesn't mean there hasn't been an occasional issue for some other reason, but for the most part it seems like it was corrected satisfactorily.

Alberta is pretty flat and i don't normally go more than a couple hours 1 way. My trailer is roughly 5500lbs fully loaded and it's me and 1.5 people n the tuck with me.
