Hi all. I'm usually in the dentside forum. Doing a tranny swap on my 1979 f250. Found a 1978 bronco with a 4 speed. Reverse is back against the seat. Would this tranny be a 435 or a t-18? Thanks

That would be a np 435. A t-18 is to the right and up.

Not always true. I had an 1988 F-150 with a T-18 and reverse was to the right and down.

Best bet is to look at the case for any manufacturer markings.

Okie Dokie. After 1978 t-18's did use over and down for reverse. 1978 and earlier was over and up.

Crawl underneath and look at it from the side.

NP435
The NP435 is known for it's smooth, round casing. It also has an aluminum shifter top:

T18
The T18 has a couple more sharp edges and straight, boxy lines on it:

1978/79 Bronco could have either the Warner T-18 (reverse shift pattern changed circa 1973) or the New Process 435.

Warner T-18: Shift lever retainer cap threads off/on.

New Process 435: Shift lever retainer cap has two notches, is retained to the shift tower with two pins.
