2008 f250 brake controller

Why does my factory brake controller, set on 10 not slide the wheels on my camper. I have a 18 foot car trailer and it will barely slide the wheels on gravel at 15 MPH. But it does not brake enough for either trailer if I have it loaded.

Have you tried it with a different truck? My 08 with my 18' trailer on # 6 will lock up all 4.
May be your trailer brakes.

The integrated TBC is designed different then aftermarket TBC's.

It is designed to seamlessly integrate the trailer brakes into the truck ABS system.

Does you truck skid? Maybe a little but not really. So the trailer brakes will act the same way.

It is working as designed and saving your tires from flat spots.

I am manually applying the trailer brakes. My car trailer locks up the wheels on gravel but not on pavement. My fifth wheel does not because it weighs to much. This controller acts like it only applies about 20% of the potential brake

check your trailer brakes. They may need adjusting.

Are you sure they are all working? Quick check is to have someone apply the truck brakes and you go to each wheel and listen. If you hear a buzz the brake has power. No buzz no power.

I am trying it on 2 different trailers. One trailer is brand new. It helps braking a little but will not help enough on my 36 foot fifth wheel to make me feel safe. My question is if there is anything that could be wrong with the controller that can be fixed without replacing the whole thing? Once again with the setting on 10 it applies the brakes enough that I can feel it but if I manually apply the brake it will not slide the tires on pavement on an empty car trailer (new) or on my camper.

You could try to measure the output at the rear of the truck and see if it is putting out enough amps for the brakes.

Other than that I really don't know what else to try.

The module is easy to replace. Have you tried the same trailers with a different truck and do the brake operate to your satisfaction?

The RV guy that hangs out in the towing section has said more than once that the controller is the most reliable part in the whole system. Lots of things could be wrong with the trailer, I would check those first.

Brand New or Not... Have you tested each wheel, on Each trailer? Just because a trailer is new, does not mean the brakes were set up correctly.

First test, hold a hand held compass to the wheel, should spin when Brakes applied.
(I have found broke / not hooked up wires this way)

Second test, jack the trailer up and spin each wheel and apply brakes. Adjust accordingly

Third test, measure the voltage at the truck, and each wheel.

I have three trailers. ALL act differently. Set between 6-9.5 on the factory brake controller. Yes I have to adjust the controller each time depending on which one I am towing. It's NOT Automatic.

I would be doing this, before replacing the Brake controller on the truck.

Would having a spartan controller and running a performance tune affect the brake system?

No the Spartan does not interact.

Go check those trailer brakes.
