Test back pressure before Cat

After reading a thread on the 5.8 back pressure, and thinking about a comment I heard from a host on the "Car Show" radio program, have a question. The car show comment was to check basically for a restriction in exhaust attach a pressure gauge to exhaust before Cat and read the back pressure. If 5 psi or higher, you have a restriction. Anyways here is my question - mechanical fittings for this - has anyone here done this ? I suppose you could get something that screwed into the O2 sensor bung, or drill a hole and mount something then weld afterwards, then find a gauge with a low scale, instead of a compression gauge. Just wonder if anyone has suggestions on this ?

Try googling exhaust backpressure gauge.

Sounds kind of like a suggestion from "Car Show" somebody who hasn't really done it?

Can use a Mechanic's vacuum gauge for this. They are a great tool for engine diagnostics and tuning. One of the many tests they are capable of is detecting exhaust restriction. Run engine up to around 2500 RPM, vacuum will decline if the Cat is plugged, say. Easy peasey, no cutting holes in anything required.

Actually I was not the caller so could not ask any of my questions, he did say muffler shops were equipped to do this. So, the host of the show although a mechanic by trade may or may not have actually done it, but knew enough to describe the process ....

I am aware of the above, been in books for years but seemed that direct reading of pressure in the exhaust is a more direct measurement .....

Different way to get the same information. A lot quicker and easier.

I suppose if you are interested in gnat's *** accuracy you might want to use a dedicated gauge installed in the pipes.
