All kidding aside....you have a 3/4 ton truck with the largest gas engine Ford put in these trucks. There is no saving gas other than ensuring you have a recent tuneup, properly inflated tires and drive under 60MPH on the highway.
If you are worried about MPGs you should buy a 4 cylinder beater. It will be cheaper in the long run.
Most of the fuel savings you'll ever get is in the way you drive it. Be light on the pedals.
That aside, 460s typically get 10MPG loaded or empty. If you're getting 11, you're doing good.
Thanks for all the tips and jokes lol. I currently don't have enough money for a beater and won't for awhile. I tested the mpg and on average driving like an old geiser I get 12 mpg
Check your ignition timing, 12° advanced with the sprout disconnected is a good place to start. It helped a buddy of mine with his mpg on his 94 460 and also has the benefit of more power which he used more often than not after. Lol
It is useful to see what the mileage is, if for no other reason this will be a direct indication of the overall state of engine tune.
Wasting fuel through an overly rich condition washes out the piston rings and dilutes the crankcase oil, and soon plugs up converter catalyst exhaust, etc. If there is annual smog testing requirement it will undoubtedly fail. So maximizing efficiency is always a good idea. Just don't expect much.
Seriously, if you're already getting 12 mpg, you're doing better than almost everyone else. I would love the 25% improvement in it would represent if I could get up to 12 mpg from the 9.5 I'm currently getting.
I get about 10 with my 460 when empty. Around 6mpg when loaded and pulling my loaded car trailer. Best mileage is when I park it and use another beater...
A front air dam would surely help, think like a rubber section cut place below the bumper, almost reaching the ground, that would improve the poor aero a lot, would look ugly too, but you would save a bunch of fuel.
I have a 94 460 e4od 4x4 410 gears,on the turnpike at 72I get 12 to 12.5.I run a open element air filter s&s and 13 deg. timming 55 psi in tires.this summer I am going to put in 373 gears it should be a little better all around.
