As of right now I have to put my truck into neutral to start it. But the thing is, is that I can switch gear by turning part of the steering column where the gear shifter is. Yes it is an automatic, I am just seeing if there is something that you guys have had the same issues with. I just bought the truck and I am fixing her up.
Welcome to FTE, lots of good people here.
First, on the NSS, there are two different styles. 73-77 the switch is mounted on top of the steering column, under the dash. On the 78-79 the switch is mounted on the side of the transmission. The manual shift arm goes through it.
You should be able to start the truck in either "park" or neutral. This switch also controls your back up lights.
I don't really get what you're saying when you say you can switch gears though.
the actual column is loose i do not understand why. the switch is on the transmission. I will be looking at it more this weekend. I am not sure why the steering column is loose, but i can actually grab the plastic piece and move it you can hear it change gear......now what is your opinion on that?
Well something it really broken in there for sure. Might be a shift tube weld or something else? You might have better luck to completely remove the column and disassemble and insp.
Taking the t/s wires out the plug to pull the complete upper is a pita, just draw a map, and use a string to re-pull the wiring back thru come reassembly time.
Make sense? Yes the big pic is for a manual trans, but it gets you an idea what is going on in there. The other 2 PDF's should apply or maybe help?
