Hello, I bought a 2002 with the 7.3 a couple months ago and never noticed that the air intake box has broken tabs and doesn't latch down. I've been looking on craigslist and eBay for a stock replacement but haven't had much luck. My only other option is an aftermarket cold air intake, which I'll admit I don't know much about. What's your guy's take on them? I'm not looking for performance, just proper filtration. Or if you know anyone selling a factory air box let me know. Thanks

Stock air boxes are known for leaking and admitting dust. On both of mine I've put the stock ones on the shelf and installed the ford ais. Pretty happy with the system. I've run the 6637, and it filters great and is cheaper, but you can hear the intake a bit more. I'd offer you my stock intakes, but I really don't recommend keeping a stock system.
last I checked rockauto.com had the lowest price on the Ford AIS setup.
it is ford severe duty replacement housing and filter system made by Donaldson and is widely acknowledged to be the best filter setup available. it is suitable for use on stock to modestly modified engines.
That AIS looks like the way I'm going to go. Do you know if it's California legal. I'm pricing it on a few different websites, but I don't see anything saying it is or isn't CA legal

yes it is. it is a factory/dealer part. the smog guy will not even know the difference as it looks the same as what came in your ex.

Is this only for the diesels, or do they make one for the V-10 as well?

Any and all filter intake setups are legal on any diesel powered Excursion, per CARB.
Not to thread hijack...but.. Will this work with a 38R and stage 2 injectors on a 7.3? I think it should be just fine, just wondering.
I have seen some data with various mods of how many inch coulum of water and CFM are needed vs what the AIS is capable of but do not have the info memorized. some Google foo should turn up the answers.
I do know that if you go by the included filter minder with just tunes and exhaust you can max out the meter but that is because it is calibrated for factory specs. according to the Donaldson rep maxing it out on a full throttle run with mods is not unexpected and acceptable, just reset it and the filter doesn't need replacing unless the filter minder pegs out under cruise conditions.

My old '02 F250 had stock AC code injectors (basically a base stage 1 stick) and a 38R and I would continually activate that darn filter minder whenever I did anything over half throttle, and I had the AFE Stage 1 intake. When I upgraded to the AFE Big Boost filter, I never had that problem ever again.
I don't know the flow difference between the AIS and the AFE units, or the 6637 filter though, so I'm not sure just how informative the above info is, but it's here for reference now.
I currently have the stage 2 AFE kit on my truck, but I find the "housing" to get in my way all the time. Plus, when I clean it, my turbo sucks in all the oil on the first run. Probably my ADHD, but I am not comfortable with that. Just ordered the AIS and we will go from there. Thanks, guys.
there is a foam boot sold by some aftermarket vendor that utilizes the hole in the fender to allow additional air volume into the box
back when these were newish to the market a rep/engineer from Donaldson was semi active on some forums answering questions and I recall the discussion about doing this mod. I don't think he answered definitively about the mod other then the location was not positive pressure like the the grill intake location. I know some people do it, may be worth finding that discussion and seeing if anybody ever determined if there is a benifit. ( I am sure you will find people who have done that say it's great, but there are a few guys who do actual real testing on them )

Real testing? Real testing??
C'mon man, this is the Internet. What do we need with facts and data? Just slap it on, oil it if it squeaks, duct tape it if it's loose, and run it like a raped ape until it breaks again and then throw more ideas, money, and parts at it!
