front driver side axle

i am a newbie to this site but i love all the support this site provides to its members so i would like to post a question and hopefully get some feedback.I have a 92 bronco and was having vibration and wobbles coming from driver side front wheel,i thought it could be wheel bearings but upon removal of rotors i noticed that the axle on driver side has in and out play and when pushed in makes clunking noise.I checked passenger side axle and when i push in that axle it feels spring loaded unlike driver side that moves freely and makes clunking noise.Is this caused by spindle bearing?I hate to throw darts at this problem and was hoping somebody could shed some light on this problem,Thank-you

While you got that wheel up in the air reach in on the back side of the axle assembly and grab the drive axle and turn it, with the hub unlocked and the t-case in 2wd it should turn relatively easy but while you are doing that observe the outer u-joint for any signs of wear. The joint should be snug but free to articulate as it contains roller bearings, but as 4wd rarely gets used on these trucks these front axle joints tend to dry out and then quickly disintegrate when they do get used.
