2000 f250 front axle play

2000 f250 front axle play
I am not certqin if I should post here or the superduty forum so please excuse me if this is in the wrong location.
I went to get my 2000 f250 4x4 aligned yesterday and the man called me right back claiming the front wheel bearing had 2.5 inches of play in it. I thought no problem I had a wheel bearing hub in my garage, simple fix. When I got down to pulling the bearing asm out I noticed that the entire axle is loose in the axle housing. By loose I mean the axle is free to move in all directions which causes play in everything downstream towards the wheel. The axle isn't pulling in and out but free to 'waller' in the housing for lack of better words. I assume that the pinion bearing is out causing this problem but wasn't sure.
How big of a job is pulling the axle and will I have to disassemble the knuckle to pull the axle? I noticed there is no way the cv joint ( I assume that is what the u-joint is) is going to pull through the outside knuckle where the cv axle comes through.
Any help or redirection to a different page would be hugely appreciated.

I spent the better part of last night scratching my head to whether I needed to pull the knuckle or not to get the axle out. To me, the axle didn't look like it would fit through the hole in the knuckle. This has cleared a lot up.

A report of findings
when trying to track down why I had axle play I felt that the wheel bearing hub was fine and that there must have been a problem towards the front diff. I was wrong, turns out that floating axles don't have bearings inside the front diff. After feeling a little dumb I put everything back together and replaced the wheel bearing hub-problem solved.
At least I got to change my front diff fluid.

Jim I did not for one reason. I need to replace some bushings soon and plan to replace seals then. Also i am about broke after this round of hunting licenses
