Hello FTE! Recently I've been looking at buying my first diesel truck and I've gotten my attention taken by a 2005 F350. It's the 6.0L engine and I'm just wanting to know if it's worth going for. I keep hearing they are either unreliable or ok, and also looking into bulletproofing the engine. All advice and help greatly appreciated!
Welcome Aboard jonjon !
Go to the sticky's and start reading , you might have more questions after you read that, but it's a good place to start.
Then let us know stuff like current miles on the unit you are looking at, what the price is, options like 4x4, XLT or Lariat and so on. And most importantly if the old owner kept service records. correct preventative maintenance (oil changes & fuel filters) are probably the most important thing that can be done for longevity.
Welcome to the forum! Read and learn as IABILL pointed out. Making a knowledgable decision is essential in buying a 6.0. Is the truck for sale by private party or dealer? History from past owners? It's getting harder to find a 6.0 for sale from the original owner with all the records etc. See if they have an OASIS report from Ford on warranty work done since new by Ford dealers.
There's a sticky at the top of the forum called the tech folder that you should look through. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/3...ch-folder.html
There are things in there to look for. Just a quick list... yes, these can be great trucks and I love mine, but dishonest or ignorant folks can hide thousands of $ of problems when selling a 6.0, so you need to know what to look for. Oil cooler, EGR cooler, overly aggressive tuners, 4wd auto hubs work? Already head studded is a plus if its not been beat and raced. FICM volts. Coolant type.
Sorry, holding my baby, typing 1 handed is slow and awkward, so i gotta stop...
