Hello people, this is only my second time posting on here, and i was hoping to get some feed back on my situation. I am getting a new truck, and i have opted to move over to the ford side for a try. I have found a ruck that im very interested in, but would like to hear what you guys have to say about it. its a 2004 f250 xlt 4x4 crew cab short bed. it has the 6.0 diesel, and 130k miles. ive heard some nasty things about these motors, and being that it would be my first diesel, i want to know if i should steer clear. i had a ford dealer run an oasis report and it completely clean. ive also heard that is fairly uncommon? in a good way? it comes with a transferrable extended warrenty that has 80k miles left on it or 6 years, which ever first. it is $15,000 and i would like to know what you guys think. yay or nay? thanks in advance
I can tell you that i have recently made the jump to the diesel world, and I did look at a lot of options. first and formost is you have to be realistic on what you want the truck for. In my case i have alway want the diesel and am at a point where i can get what i want.
i bought a 2005 f350 CCSB 4x4 and the 6.0, my oasis had a few things on it but when i checked out the truck it was well maintained with other records. I was leary but confident i would do ok. I also have an extended warenty witch gives some piece of mind.
being realistic though you have to go into this knowing that you HAVE to do the maintainence. If you don't it will be a money pit. I have only been on this website for the last month but i can tell you that if youy have even a little bit of mechanical ability you will be able to do most of the work on this truck. (with the help of the knowledgable folks here at FTE)
There is a link in the sticky section that is a link to all the information you will need. look through it and see what it is going to take.
then ask yourself if i want to do what it will take to keep my motot happy. I can tell you from my perspective it is relaxing to go out and play with my toy.
Get a car faxs (?) also. Most important are the maintenance records. See if they have them also. IIRC there is a new buyers guide in the Tech folder. I always recommend buying, borrowing or stealing a gauge (insight, scan, dashdag, etc.) and plug it into the OBD II port and take er for a spin. Get er good and hot (ect around 192) and go down the highway several miles. Check ect vs. eot. If eot is greater than 15 degrees over the ect the oil cooler and maybe egr cooler will need replaced. Watch the extended warranty, I got skunked on mine. I think only Ford is recommended. Good luck, these are really great engines if they are properly maintained.
