clogged IPR valve

So my IPR valve went out not quite 2 months ago (maybe 3,000 miles back) and yesterday when starting it did the same run for 2 seconds and shut down. Had it towed into my shop and got a call this morning from them and was told that the screen on the IPR valve was clogged with a possible silicone or gasket material. Their concern is not knowing where the substance came from. Any ideas what to check into?

I have only had the truck since Nov and have put not even 5k miles on it, so I have no idea if someone before me had done any type of gasket replacement and used RTV maybe?

I have not replaced the oil cooler personally, was planning to do that with the egr delete next week. The oil cooler was the next recommendation from the guy at the shop too.

Whats the temperature spread between oil and coolant? Why did he recommend a cooler change?

If your doing an oil cooler, do a chemical flush this week or it will just clog again (the cooler). Normally gasket material or RTV from the oil cooler cover.

I have only factory gauges still so not sure the exact temps, I have just recently picked up a programmer/tuner with a screen for digital readouts.

With the symptom being the exact same as when the IPR went out last time I just assumed it to be the problem again and I had plans to bring it into the shop to have EGR delete done this week and I expected to have the oil cooler replaced at that time as well. So I guess I would have been the one to suggest the oil cooler change initially and he is leaning that way as well.

I am new to diesels and wanted to get some other input from other parties instead of just one techs thoughts.

Unless you can get with the last owner and they tell you every repair done on it honestly its just a shot in the dark knowing what or where gasket/silicone came from, if you had this happen before it might be a good idea to pull the pan and clean out everything thats in it, still may be junk on valley screen as well. With that many miles its very doubtful its from a factory gasket or silicone, just a suggestion,

You won't know if it was the gasket or possibly a Dorman cooler unless it comes out. Only a couple places that gasket material or RTV can come from, head gaskets ain't one of them and most likely not the pan either.

You replaced the IPR from clogging before. That happens after an oil cooler change and you will see a bunch of posts from guys having clogged IPR after oil cooler changes. No need to panic yet.

I wouldn't buy another IPR, remove the IPR and pry the screen off, verify the valve is good with a screw driver (should move about 1/8" by pushing it) and replace with a new SS screen kit, about $60 instead of $270.

Get a Scan Gauge or Torque Pro to watch pressures and % to see if it starts clogging again... then while watching, save up some $$.

Thanks Watson, the tech did say the IPR was still good. I bought an Edge Juice w Attitude tuner that's got the readout for all the gauges I am having installed while its in the shop so I can monitor the vitals.

Can you get service history from the previous owner? Either way you should also visit a Ford dealer and ask their service department for an OASIS report on your truck. That will tell you anything Ford has done on it.

You do need to gain some knowledge on some of the data your truck knows via its ODBII interface, and the temperature spread between oil and coolant is a good one to look at before jumping on a cooler. Since you were doing the EGR delete anyway, and if you don't see it on the OASIS or from previous owners that the original STC (Snap To Connect) fitting off the HPOP was replaced (there is an updated part from Ford), you might want to consider having that done. On edit: a new SS IPR screen comes in the STC replacement kit, btw...

There are other things you'll determine once you start pulling real-time data from your truck, like the health of your Fuel Injection Control Module (FICM) and charging system. Take a read through the 6.0 tech section and you will find a wealth of info on what to monitor and what things to consider doing proactively on your truck.

Oh and Welcome to FTE and congats on the truck too!!
