Help!! Fluids on 2000 4.2L E150

I just bought a used E150, but no owners manual

What trans comes on the 2000 4.2L E150? Does it take Mercon/ Dex III, or Mercon LV?

Also does the 4.2L take 6 Quarts of oil?

Lastly what is the best coolant to use?

There are owner's manuals at the Ford Fleet site: Put in your year and vehicle and download one for free:

Owner Manuals | fleet.ford.com

Trans should be a 4R70W and would use Mercon V. Ford eliminated the old Mercon and retro-specced Mercon V for most all their regular vehicles.

Not sure about the engine oil capacity; my old 4.6 was 6 quarts; info should be in the owners manual.

My '02 E150 came with the 100k mile gold ford coolant which was good for 100k miles. I think '00 would still have the old green factory fill which had a much shorter change recommendation (like 3/36). If you totally drain the system, you could switch over to the gold coolant (also known as Zerex G-05) and maybe get a bit longer life out of it. But even after changing the gold in a van with gold factory fill, I don't think the new change interval is quite as long (maybe 5/60).

Good luck with the van,
George

What Diff oil do you use? On mine it says on a metal tag 75w-140w. But a tech at Ford said use 80-90. He said ignore the tag oil had come a long way.

So should I believe the tag or so called tech??

I used 80-90 conventional oil with an LS additive but I had an Eaton posi installed when my van was brand new. The gear shop guy recommended the thinner lube for fuel economy purposes. The change interval is a long time but if you are starting with a new to you 2000 model year van, changing the lube is a good start. If you have a Ford Traction Loc axle, be sure to use a lube with limited slip additive or add some yourself.

If you are not sure if you have LS or not, the axle code on the driver's door jamb will have a code telling you what you have.

If you are going to do heavy duty towing, you might want to go with a full syn 75w-140 weight for more film strength.

The "19" axle code would be a 3.55 without a factory limited slip. What I would expect in an E150. What that tells you is that you do not need limited slip additive in the lube. (But it is no problem to use lube with LS additive--Mobil 1 comes only with LS additive.) It's gonna be an 8.8" Ford axle and I ran mine for 129k miles with 80/90 in it.

Viscosity is your choice; I would use 75w/140 full synthetic if I was going to tow with the van, but if you are gonna use it with low to moderate loads, the lighter weight 80/90 should be OK and better for gas mileage. I would use full syn in your open diff axle--the Eaton posi I put in mine came with a recommendation for non-synthetic. My axle guy who put in the Eaton was the one who said to run the 80/90 so he's with your Ford source.

Let's see if anyone else weighs in. Good luck with the van,
George
