F250 five speed?

Did Ford ever build a 5 speed transmission for an F 250?
If they did what do you folks know about it and will it fit into a 1970 F100 that currently has a 3 speed manual

Ford put the ZF 5 speeds in the f-250's.

As for whether it'll go in your truck or not depnds on the motor you have. If you have an FE, no dice. if it's a 300/302/351W you need a smallblock tranny and if it's a 351M/400/460 you need a bigblock tranny

My engine is a 302-
they built 2 versions of the tranny, one for big block and one for small block? Is 5th an overdrive?

How tough are these trannys? Are they pretty smooth, reliable?
I want to put it in an F100 for purposes of getting rid of the long sloppy shifts associated with a 3 on the tree manual. I want to shorten up my shifts, to keep the engine in the powerband and an overdrive for the highway. The idea it to keep beating the tar outta the chevys- the boys back home like their early 90's chevys with there big exhaust, alloy rims and big sound systems. I like to beat them.

In all actuality the ZF will have a gear spread like your 3 speed. 1st gear is a granny gear, 5th is an overdrive, 2-3-4 would be like 1-2-3 on your current tranny. If you're looking for a close ratio unit for racing you'd be looking at a toploader 4 speed or a 5 speed out of a 5.0 mustang (has ratios like the toploader 4, but with an O/D). Could even go with a T-56 6 speed (close ratio four with compound overdrives) if you do alot of highway driving.
