NEED ENGINE SPECS

Just bought a 1979 Ford F600 dump truck today with a 370 2V in it. Can't find much on the motors so can anyone help me out on that? I've seen some pretty rough horror stories about it not being very good on gas (about 4-6 mpg) and not being a really big powerhouse for the size. The main things i need to know is:
1. Where do i get parts for it?
2. Whats the horsepower/torque numbers
3. What other (better) engine could I swap out with it easily?

Any side notes :
1. it has a 16ft dump bed
2. 5 speed manual dual range transmission

Any help would be greatly apprecaited! Thank you!

Sounds like the 370 is a de-bored 460... with low compression and a number of MD truck specific features like special front cover, bigger crank pilot and bigger flywheel. Hard to hurt and not a powerhouse. I suppose it may be possible to build up a new engine around a 460 block with greatly improved performance.

Worth it?

While the 370 isn't a real beast when it comes to power, it is a very durable engine. Back in the '80s I drove one for a Texaco distributor. It was a '79 F-600 with a 2000 gallon tank on it. We ran it until daily until '86, then it was our back-up for several years after that. If I recall, it had around 200k on the odometer when we sold it.

Well what do you think would be the easiest thing to swap it out with if we had to?

370 and 429 "Lima" medium truck engines do not easily interchange with car/light truck 460s.

I'm pretty sure the crank snout and maybe the rear flange are different. Accessory drives are different, engine mounts may be different.

It's been done, but it's not a direct swap.

As for parts, NAPA has a lot, you just have to find someone who knows what a medium truck is.

Your transmission is not dual range. You have a two speed rear axle.

Read all about it. It DOES NOT and SHOULD NOT be shifted like a transmission, especially on a down hill.
