460 questions

I'm not big on the 460. Most of my time has been spent on the 302 and the FE line. But I came across a complete 460 out of a mid 80's F350 cheap. So I'm thinking of putting it into the 78 F250 I'm doing a custom rebuild on. I've read on here about all this power and toqure this engine puts out and I'm wondering... It sort of sounds too good be ture. I've seen numbers like 500hp and 600 foot pounds of torque. Are those number real world or just something with a pot load of money put into them?

I plan on doing a rebuild on the 460 before putting it into the project truck. My truck has to earn its keep. 4 or 5000 lbs in the bed or 10,000 on the trailer is not unheard of. So the engine will be working, not just going along for the ride. So what kind of numbers can be had from this mill with a good rebuild and some "better" parts to make more power? It must run on regular gas. The 390 in my other truck is killing me with 10.5:1 comp.

Any ideas/suggestions? I'm going to set a budget for the rebuild at $2500-$3000.

Thanks
Buck

There are some really good builds with dyno numbers and engine specs at 460ford.com in the engine build section page two. The 460 is a great torque engine and with your budget you can build a powerfull and reliable motor.

You might even look at a stroker kit for easier power. Something like a 514 or 521.

Buck, the added benifit of going with a stroker is you get a all new rotating assembley. New crank ,new rods new pistons and most come with rings and berings.Just do some head work and you will be suprised. P.S. don't forget a earley timing chain set.
Good luck
Bill

I stopped and looked at the 460 I want to pick up. It is in a 1987 commerical F350 DRW, two wheel drive with a manual trans. It is a non-cat truck. Can you guys tell me about this engine? Hp, torque, compression, heads, etc etc. None of my books cover this new of a year. I deal more in the older stuff 79 and older so I don't have any books for the newer stuff. I'd like to build a nice stump puller out of it.

As far as a stroker goes I really don't think I want to put that kind of money out. I hope it will be able to put out the HP/TQ with a stock crank.

Thanks as always
Buck

Look to e-bay for the Ford truck motor mounts you will need. You have the oil pan and exhaust manifolds already on the 460. Pretty much a bolt in deal. I think you will be very happy with this engine in your truck.

Thanks
