Does the 6.7's reliability really ruin the fun?
The gas HD market is interesting. It seems like the big three have provided reliable, but underpowered, engines for many years now. GM has the least attractive gas V8 right now, the 6.0L only has 360hp and 380lb-ft...which is less than the Ford 5.0 produces. RAM gives you two options, the 5.7L or 6.4L Hemi, but the test of the 6.4L Hemi revealed deep shortcomings in the way the engine and transmission can limit power to protect itself. The 6.2L Ford is much better than the 5.4L, but probably not as good as the 6.8L which was previously offered. However, the 6.2L seems to be intentionally neutered compared to what it could be putting out. GM may offer the 6.2L in its HD trucks, which would bring them to the head of the class.
I was really hoping Ford would offer an EcoBoost gas engine in the Super Duty. If the 3.5L gen-2 in the Raptor can produce 450hp and 500lb-ft, that would be a great engine choice in the Super Duty. I'd like to see 400HP and 525lb-ft with the CGI block from the 2.7L. I think Ford refuses to offer this because it would seriously cut into diesel sales (remember, this output was equaling 6.0L powerstroke output not long ago).
Since Ford is sticking with the 6.2L V8, they are promising some kind of a power increase. I'd like to see Direct Injection offered and more aggressive cams, with power at 400HP and torque at 450. If that is where they are at, I might consider a gas again.
Yesterday I towed a small 16' enclosed trailer loaded with equipment....not real heavy around 6k. A gasser will easily pull that with little problem but I can say this 6.7 pulls it without even breaking a sweat....it does not down shift on hills where my 6.2 would constantly drop which was annoying as hell and I would often lock out 6th....then it would just drop one gear to 4th on a hill. Dont misunderstand what I'm saying.....my 6.2 pulled my big trailer no problem but it constantly gear hunted and it was screaming! the 6.7 just does it effortlessly!
plain and simple do your maintenance pay attention to the truck.....which is really easy as hell and dont neglect anything and you will be fine.
Both engines will pull what you need but the towing experience in the 6.7 is second to none! you really do relax pulling a heavy load.....hell i was pulling 6k yesterday and got a little heavy on the throttle leaving a light and it rolled the 35" tire....that just neck breaking tq!
its easy to over analize and scare yourself out of not having it...if its what you want and you have the means then buy one and enjoy it!

With any new technology there is the risk it won't be up to the task. Arguably some people will say this about the Ford 6L and 6.4L diesels. The 7.3L is bulletproof and every indication is that the 6.7L is headed in the same diction...only time will tell.
Anyone who does their own maintenance on a gas rig can learn to do the same on a diesel rig. Now there is more to changing an injector than replacing a fuel line, but I don't count that as general maintenance. All you need to do is get the right directions and follow them and you will be fine. There might be a couple of new steps, but it's not all that much more.
Diesels ar doff rent than gamers in many way, but the if from a function perspective your needs are better served, or if you just want one...do it. Life it's too short.
I'm tugging a decently loaded trailer everywhere I go because I'm a rigger. I fill up my fuel tanks and hit the road, change the oil when the truck tells me, fuel filters every 15k, rotate tires every 15k, wash the truck weekly. The truck is the least of my worries and that's a nice thing. We ran a gas truck for 2 years and it served us well, but it was a chore to drive. The diesels are not a chore to drive.
