Intake swap questions

This one might be up the alley for Conanski, or others who have done the swap, anyways here is the question. If going from a stock 92 EFI setup with dual throttle bodies to say the typhoon with the elbow and the single TB, how many other factors need to be dealt with, or how much hassle to get to the end ? Not sure how the EGR setup, intake boots, sensors, etc factor into the mix. I talked to Edelbrock today on an issue and they seemed to believe there are significant issues involved, from discussions previously here, it wasn't suggested that these are terribly involved, so what say you - more knowledgeable folks ?

i think you would have to go with a explorer 5.0 style for the egr setup cables, rerun wiring, the harness should support it . I would look at the lighting layout as well

Ok, I will have to study the details of this it sounds like. Do you know if the elbow will fit the typhoon upper manifold ? If I also get the TB stock from the 5.0 will that likely work OK on the 5.8 ? you might ask about the internals, assuming the Gt40 heads and either a stock or slightly better cam that would be the projected setup .....

A secondary question here, I do have a chance to get a mustang edelbrock setup at a decent price - less than a typhoon, is it worth trying to go that route or stick with the typhoon setup - truck application ?

There aren't any hugh insurmountable issues with using a single TB style intake. EGR is internally manifolded with the Typhoon and Eddy Performer so as long as the cylinder heads you use have the heat riser ports in the back of one of the central exhaust ports the EGR system will function. These intakes use a Mustang style EGR spacer and valve and a throttlebody with a 70mm bore. Wireing should all work pretty well, you may have to "stretch" some of the wires for the TPS and EGR which means they can either come out of the wire loom a little or get spliced for added length. The other thing is the throttle and AOD cables if so equipped, the Mustang TB uses different connectors and anchor points for these so you will want to source those cables and brackets from a car.

And I'll mention again I still have a brand new 5.8 Typhoon in black crinkle powdercoat finish for sale with free shipping to the lower 48 or other parts of canada, PM for details.

thanks for this info. Just sent a PM. You mentioned the heat riser ports in the back of the exhaust ports, I am not at home to look at the heads but do these normally exist in the 96 gt40p heads ? Another question, does it make better sense to get a TB from the newer, say 96 explorer/mountaineer truck to have less issues with connectors and cabling ?

You can block off the valve, leaving everything else in tact, and the truck will run fine without the ramming of exhaust back into the intake.

I believe they do, there will be a 5th smaller port right in the middle between the two central intake ports that feeds passages through the lower and upper intake to the EGR spacer.

I don't believe that will solve the issue as the Explorer uses a car style cable as well, but if you have access to one it would be a good parts donor.
