I own 2 vehicles with the 4.0L V6 engine, a ’94 Ranger and a ’02 Explorer. I’ve repaired a few things on them, but I am not that knowledgeable about the more intricate characteristics of the 4.0L engine. A friend of mine has a 2001 Mazda B-Series truck, with the 4.0L engine. It has 108K miles on it. He tells me that it was running fine, then when he was pulling out of a parking lot into the road yesterday, the engine shuddered and died. He restarted it, but it continued to run rough, and died, almost immediately.
The first thing I thought about was the cam position sensor I had to replace on the 2000 F-350 7.3 diesel I had. Is there a similar sensor that may have gone bad on this engine? Any other thoughts on where to look?
If the vehicle CEL/SES light is lit, trouble code clues will be stored in the engine computer that a code reader, or scantool can extract. If he doesn't have one, or can't borrow one for a scan & you & he would like to learn to turn your own wrenches, the inexpensive ELM scantool like discussed here https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...-scantool.html, running FORScan or the like software on the viewing device of his choice, can have a More in depth look into All of the vehicle computer/controllers for trouble code clues, than most simple code readers, or low end scan tools.
Then post up All code Numbers & the forum can likely suggest where best to look next in his trouble shoot.
Thank you, Sir!! Some of the guys I work with and I were discussing that same thing earlier today! I'm gonna suggest that to my friend and we'll see where it goes from here!
I recently had a continuing problem were my 2001 Ranger would not start after a long drive or intermittently .
I learned that it was due to a faulty inertia switch located on my model under the dash board near the passenger kick panel.
It only cost about 32.00 dollars at auto zone and the problem was corrected. This switch can be come faulty after an front end collsion with a car or pot hole. Mine was a pot hold of course so I hope this helps sounds like the same problem I had
