Overtorque error
2007 Ford 4.6L (Crown Vic) motor. Putting it into a 77 F100. Took it apart to check the timing chains and look at valve wear. It was darn near flawless at 170k miles.
Putting it back together, I over torqued the head bolts. Way-way over torqued (like 3x). Don’t ask, I'm embarrassed enough to have to admit it.. Found out what I’d done and have undone it. Time to start over.

Question: I know I need new bolts; do I need to replace the gaskets? They are those multi-layer steel permatorque things. I know the conservative answer is ‘yes’ but I’m pissed off I just wasted $50 on bolts and $45 on gaskets.
Would you think the gaskets were OK? I can’t imagine them compressing – they are steel.
Normally, they would have at least small indentations around important features such as the cylinders, water jacket and oil return passages. And these indentations get flattened a little when you torque the head down.
I'm pretty sure you should get a new set.
$45 now or $45 + a bunch more time later when you have low compression or oil/water leak...

Like already said spend the money for new gaskets or be prepared to be pissed all over again when you're re-doing this for the THIRD time.
