Can anyone think of a reason why the coolant in my '72 302 would be getting all foamed up. After a long drive I see foam coming out of the overflow tube.
I am thinking combution pressure might be leaking through a crack in a head or block or maybe past the head gasket. Before I tear it all apart I want to try all the simple things.
They make a tester for blown head gaskets or cracks. It’s a funnel looking thing that goes on the radiator filler. You fill it with water and it has a one-way valve at the bottom. With it sitting on the filler, any gasses that are entering the cooling system will go past the one-way valve and bubble up the column of water in the funnel. It’s a simple device but works, your hope is you don’t see any bubbles coming up.
Also check how tight your head bolts are, if they are all loose then the bolts have stretched from a freeze condition. Do NOT reuse the old head bolts, they will yield and not come up to torque properly. I had this happen on a smallblock, you could actually see the old bolts were longer than originally.
