Impossible to know since you didn't say what transmission is in your truck. It could either use gear oil or Mercon ATF. A 2 x 4 is a board size. A 2wd drive is a 4 x 2.
Not to sound like a tool bag but there are probably dozens of threads on this topic.

Oops! My bad.. Yes it is a 4x2 and I believe 5 speed automatic.
If it is an Automatic, C-6, E4OD, then it's regular Mercon/Dexron.
Mazda 5spd get regular Mercon/Dexron. I'm unsure of the ZF.
I believe anything older than mid 80's got gear oil.
87 F150s never had a a 5 speed automatic. If it's automatic, it's either a 3 speed or 4 speed. Either way, regular Mercon is the stuff to use. GM used the same stuff, but they called it "Dexron III." That's why a lot of the bottles will say "Dexron III/Mercon."
Mercon V will also work, as it supersedes regular Mercon.
I just got the truck so I don't know much about it. Noticed the tranny fluid is low and it doesn't always wanna shift into drive without revving it up alittle bit. It's a automatic and I'm pretty sure it's a 4 speed. So the merc on/dexron is what I should use? Any other recommendations for checking it? I know your supposed to drive it for alittle bit then check it.
According to an AllData TSB the recommended fluid is now Mercon V. Standard Mercon will work but at my job I always recommend Mercon V in these sorts of situations.
MERCON is discontinued, MERCON V is the replacement fluid.
That's actually not true. Go to Kragen/Oreilly and look at their Dex/Merc fluid. That stuff meets several different specs, and it will cover the MERCON spec. Not that I would use that stuff anyways, but you get my point.
