Hey there, i'm about to do the full DS2 swap with the carb and all, and was just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on the most affordable non-feedback reman one barrel carb for my I6 85' f150. I've looked all over the net and have some good ideas on what I want and the prices and all that, but I just wanted to pop in and see if anyone might know any sites that would have a better deal on carters or autolites than say summitracing, jegs, rockauto, etc..
All that is a good read and pretty clever, Jim.
My thing is that I'm replacing it anyways, so I'm just trying to find that best bang for my buck before I place an order.
Here's the best deal I've found so far, thoughts on the price, and the carb itself?(Looking for a good stock replacement)
Wow all the info in that thread is amazing. The mpg numbers he achieved is pretty dang good for these old trucks. I'll be going back and re-reading it again once my truck is runnin better.
Yes, his truck is doing well - for him. Don't miss how he drives, as your mileage WILL vary if you drive his truck like a teenager.
Yeah that's important, and I always drive like I'm a hundred years old anyways, so I'm alright in that aspect. If I can steadily average 15 mpg with my new setup I'll be happy. My truck is stuck in safe mode so I'm only pulling about 8-10 every tank. On top of that I need to learn how to use a vacuum gauge to tune my motor, so that'll help once the time comes.
That combo might do fairly well as the C5 has a clutch to lock the torque converter. However, it doesn't have an overdrive like David's tranny does, so you won't get the economy he's getting. But, you should break the 15 MPG goal quite handily.

Yeah I would like the overdrive but It's not the biggest deal in the world. I really like my trucks combo, but I'd like to see someday If I can run 32s or 33s while still getting 15 mpg. Goals, lol.
As you go larger on the tire OD, the engine RPMs for the same speed will decrease, rolling resistance will likely increase and the speedometer and odometer will read less than actual... something to think about. The speedometer and odometer can be corrected by changing the driven speedometer gear [not too difficult or expensive].

Yep. I suspect that 32's are going to increase the rolling resistance more than the RPM decrease will help, and 33's will be even worse. I have 30's on Rusty at present and they seem to give better MPG, and certainly better handling and ride, than the 31's I have for it.
