79 block crankshaft question

Hey guys. I've been looking and have been seeing a lot of mixed answers. I recently acquired a semi assembled D9TE block. The lower end is assembled but I am trying to figure out if the crank is external or internally balanced. There is no external weight on it now and I haven't seen one in the pile of parts that came with it. So what I've seen in the forums is that there is a casting number that indicates external in later 79 blocks and I also have seen that all 79 blocks are external. I'm trying to figure out which is true. Also is there a way to tell by looking at the crank?

Thanks, Walt

All D9TE blocks *won't* clear an internal balanced crank.
Look for 3Y stamped on the third counterweight.

Good to know. I will check that when I get home.

Now I will double check to see if that counter weight is in with the parts for sure but if it is missing do I have to have one tailored to the crank or are they all the same?

Stock parts for an external balance engine are all interchangeable.

Be sure you are using a weighted flexplate as well.
