I assume that all the proper checks have been made that EGTs are in line for this motor. High exhaust temps cause real problems with headers as they radiate the heat more effectively.
If you have problems with timing, mixture, or valves your EGTs will be higher than expected resulting in increased underhood temps - IMO.
