I wrapped my $69 headers on my 390 4 years ago and they are still going strong. I'm glad nobody told me I couldn't do it.
The wrapping seems not to have caused rust and seems to have actually prevented it. Whats the deal, are the hi-temp coatings co.'s behind this contraversey? I wrapped with Thermo Tech 2"
wrap with 1/4" overlap like they said.
I'm glad to hear that! I wrapped one of mine just like that and noticed that the header got red hot on that one side, and that concerned me. I think the coating is just one other option and I have heard about the rusting out too fast, but you can't always go by one guys story.
Maby it has somthing to do with running lean. I saw a picture of an engine on a test stand running red hot. When I looked
at my headers they had a thin coating of black soot ie: carbon on the inside. I could probably run leaner and hotter by changing the jets and set the timing back and burn a hole in a piston trying to get my headers red hot. Maby it works for me because the FE just runs colder.
Anybody with an FE ever tried this?
