Pitman arms come in 6.5 and 7.5 inch lengths. When I installed the new Redhad box the pitman arm would not come off the original box so I had to replace it. OE on my 4X4 was 7.5, but only available was 6.5. Slowed the steering a bit but nothing a new driver would notice.
Don't recall any issue with X or + configurations. Maybe the 32 spline is X and 36 is +, or vice versa?
So I'm not familiar with removing and installing Pitman arms. If the spline is right and he could just go pick a new one, why wouldn't he just use his old one??? Is there more to R/R than meets the eye????
I order one from moog.see if it's close to what I need.lol Glad we have this forum to be able to share info.so other will know what to look for. I thought only diff was 32 and 36 spline. I'm still not to old to learn.might not remember it nexts week. Lol Randy
It might be that simple. I wonder if there are different length pitman arms for different applications, i.e. 2wd, 4wd, F150, van.... Or maybe ford just felt like screwing with us.
What I can tell you about this is...my E99 came lifted and I unlifted it. It had a 4" drop Pittman arm, that means that the small end of the arm is 4" below the end that mounts on the steering box when it is mounted. The non lifted Pittman arm is flat or close to it. The E-450 2WD that I am harvesting has a slight drop on the Pittman arm, 1", maybe 2" and it does not appear to be as beefy as our 4WD Pittman arms. I wouldn't be surprised if your 2WD truck had the same Pittman arm as this van. I don't know how the lengths compare.
Here is what Rock Auto has listed for the pitman arm for a 2000 F-250. Not sure what R.E.M. is driving, but I would assume that he ordered one of the two Moog parts listed here.
Right or wrong the one I ordered is k80783. k80795 looked like the one came on my truck. I'll let y'all know if it work or I chunked it in the woods. it was useless talking to part department at ford. They said my f250 4x4 did not come with a 32 spline shaft and they only made one arm. Randy

Now I'm confused. From what I see, the k80783 is for a 32 spline. Isn't the Redhead a 36 spline?
Well, I'm a dumb a$$. My lazy a$$ wouldn't take the time to remove the bracket so I could get a good spline count. So I order the wrong box and the other Pittman arm I order didn't fit the new box. Send box back. This costed few extra dollars.. guy at red head said I wasn't the first to do this. Still felt like a dumb a$$.
