Thanks Cartmanea. I borrowed a pitman arm removal tool set from Advance Auto.

I think it should more accurately be called a pitman arm PUSHER since you're pushing the end of the tie rod end out of the Steering Arm and steering knuckle.

Call me crazy.

Best bet has already been posted. Crank the puller tight, don't expect the puller to get it off itself without turning the puller to junk. Once the puller has the arm preloaded, get out of the way and give it a whack with a small sledge. Be ready to get away because the puller and pitman will fly........but it will come off.

A puller and a few taps with a hammer will take it off. I'll advise against the pickle fork, good chance on cracking the steering box....don't ask how i know.

I use a quality two arm puller. I do like the looks of the snap-on unit though. Loosen the nut and keep it on the shaft a full set of threads. Attach the puller and run it tight with the impact. Hit the arm with a mini sledge and repeat tightening and hitting until loose. Leaving the nut on the end of the shaft keeps parts from flying all over the place and maybe causing injury.

You aint kidding about the injury part...I popped the pitman arm off (both sides) with truck on ground using the standard cheapy pitman arm puller...worked like champ, but that sucker literally popped out. Scared me silly.

At 200k miles, the new pitman arm sure makes the steering feel tighter.

The pitman arm doesn't wear out, so this comment seems strange to me. Did you replace any tie rod ends at the same time?

I'm sorry I thought it was implied...a new pitman arm with new tie rod ends on it.

Having to replace my gearbox because I snapped the spline on the gearbox.... yes it's allot easier removing the GB first to access the pitman arm

BTW if your wondering my F350 is raised 10" with 35" tires

I believe it was from a head on collision 6months prior to.... the "PT Cruiser" went under my truck, we both we're going about 15-20 if not a little more, she ran a stop light as I was making a left, had my truck been lifted it would have been allot worse, I actually drove away from the accident and needless to say the PT Cruiser looked like a smart car..... (She was not hurt)

WEAR SAFETY GLASSES or a FACE SHIELD when applying a great deal of torque to things under old trucks.

I had a puller and the pitman arm assembly fly 3 feet in the air when they let loose from an '85 Toyota steering box that I had clamped in my vise. Sounded like a gunshot and scared me half to death.

Go run your truck at 1,400+ 'till the motor stops and report back, with pictures of the carnage.
