Trying to remove the shifter on my 97 F150 XLT 5.4L 4x4, but I've run into a problem. I understand that after removing the boot, you unthread the nut on one side and put it on the other to pull the shifter retaining bolt out. My problem is the nut is MISSING. I've been to multiple parts stores and Ford's part dept to try and find out the thread and nut size of that nut. No luck.
Do you know what size that nut is?? OR, is there another way to get that retaining bolt out of the base of the shifter without the nut?
It's actually for the manual transmission shifter.
Yesterday I went to the hardware store and bought 6 nuts of varying size and thread. One of them felt like a perfect fit...but when I got the bolt out I can see I shaved some of the threads. Looks like I'm going to have to replace the bolt. On the bright side now I can figure out the right nut size with the bolt out! One step back and one step forward!
