1996 trans slipping?

I recently bought a 1996 F150 4x4 Auto with a 5.0 (302) small lift, 33x12.50-15 all-terrains. The truck has a ton of miles but I mainly bought it as a toy/fixer-up. I'm not sure what auto trans it has or if they even had different options that year, but I do have some questions that might not pertain to a certain trans. I'm sure there has already been some forums on this subject but I'm not sure how to search for it. Anyway the truck seems to run great and has enough power for what I need. The only issue I've discovered so far is that between 40-50mph the truck shifts into O/D, when it does the truck developes and shudder. It isnt a constant shudder but a repetitive shudder, but right before it shudders it revs up just a little, it does this over and over until I get above 50mph. If I turn O/D off it never does it at any speed. I dont feel a loss of speed or power when it does it. I just hear it rev and I feel the shudder. I've checked fluid levels and added a bottle of Lucas stop-slip becasue I like lucas products. So, does this sound familiar to anyone? ANY help or advice would be appreciated.

Would appear to me that a rebuild/ replacement is in your future.

Likely torque converter clutch slip, but it can also be from a misfire. I'd do a complete tune up on the truck and change the fluid.

The transmission is 100% electronic controlled. Check for codes before spending more money.

rla2005, will it pull up codes on a regular scanner if no CEL's are on? Or will I have to actually use a computer/scanner?

A regular code reader will work just fine. I have an Innova 3030 from years ago and just recently started using an ELM-based bluetooth scanner with Torque and FORScan apps.

Also positively ID your trans by finding the trans code on the drivers door pillar decal and compare to this list.

Trans code - Transmission
E - E4OD
U - 4R70w
T - AOD

Keep in mind that unlike the OBD-1 trucks, your OBD-2 truck will not readily give you transmission codes with a conventional code reader (unless something is really wrong).

I recommend you get a Bluetooth or USB ELM327 adapter, and download the free software called ForScan (Forscan, not Fordscan). It can read in-depth information from these trucks.

Are you sure about that? If it was a diesel, that's a different story and I would agree.

Since this is a gas engine F150 I am reasonably sure a standard code reader will retrieve transmission codes.

Not always. My buddy's Ranger would have a flashing O/D light, but a standard code reader showed nothing at all. We had to use ForScan to see what was up.

The 1996 OBD-II system on these OBS trucks is very primitive. I would expect to be able to retrieve a transmission code just like the 1995 and earlier OBD-I trucks. If this were a 1997 and later, probably not as you stated earlier.

Only way to tell is give it a whirl!

On the other hand a ELKM327 and FORScan is probably cheaper than a plug in reader anyway. Might as well invest in a tool with better capability.
