Weird starter issue
Here goes, when starting my 79 f 250 with 400 the starter stays energized only after the truck starts. When cranking if I let off the key it stops cranking so it's not the relay. If the truck starts, only then the starter keeps cranking. I have a new key switch and relay anyways. Any ideas? I tried searching but didn't find much.

if you pull the wire off the S terminal of the solenoid does the starter stop? If so, you need to find out why that wire is energized when the key returns to run from the crank position.
If it doesn't stop, it could be the solenoid contacts are welding together or the starter bendix could be sticking in the flywheel and not retracting.
