Twenty miles down the interstate on the way out, the coolant temp gauge pegs out on H. I found ambient temperature to affect this slightly, and could only drive above 70 MPH at night as a consequence. It was quite a long drive. If parked and shut off, boiling coolant quickly overflowed and splashed my sandal-clad feet as I stood nearby. For $195 at my destination, I had the water pump, thermostat and coolant changed. Found out how futile that was, again 20 miles down the interstate on the way home. $215 later, the radiator was changed in an Advance Auto parking lot during a down pouring east coast thunderstorm. Problem solved! I was home free for the remaining 1150 miles!
Then, the vibrations began. Horrible shaking sensations. Imagine driving along at 80 MPH and three of your wheels lose their weights. This was frightening to begin with, and it only grew worse. Fifty miles south of Louisville, KY, I hear something which sounded like an armadillo impact the underbody at 50 MPH. I check the rear view mirror to see what I had killed or lost... nothing. The vibrations receded. I pulled over at the next fuel stop and got to see exactly what a tire looks like without its tread. The driver's rear, to be specific. I made a 'gator! I thought only retreads could do that!
I was forced to call in a nearby tow/shop owner, at 0630 on a Sunday morning, to put a used tired on so I could drive home. That was $50.The shaking returned on the first on-ramp. I stopped in at a Tires Plus nearby to get this addressed. I swore I was about to lose my other three tires, it rode so rough. A worker pointed out, to my horror, egg-sized bulges in the tread patterns of all the remaining tires. After filling my pants and selecting a new set of Dayton Timberline AT meats for $470, I was heading back home once again.
Keep all your rides in decent condition, friends. Don't let neglect burn a hole in your wallet when you least expect it, as it did to me. In this case, one of the previous owners never got the cooling system flushed (radiator plugged with rot and sediment) and likely didn't maintain his tire pressures (severe belt separation). I bought the vehicle for $750 in June, and lost $1000 to catch-ups just two weeks ago.
