Truck: 81 F100 power steering. Issue: Truck all over the road on the little road test I took when buying it.
At first I thought it was bad bushings as the pivot bushings looked to be moving a little with the owner moving the wheel. When I got it home and help from the wife I found the kingpins frozen. All tie rod ends are good, no play. Got truck pulled apart and the pivot bushing & strut rod bushings looked good. Did not find play in the kingpins to cause the scary road test just frozen.
In all this checking I did not find any play in the steering box but it was always with the motor not running. The play felt like a full turn of the wheel on the road test and would think it would show up even if not running.
So should I have checked for play in the box with it running? Would the frozen kingpins cause this and if so how? I just don’t see how they could. Thanks Dave ----
Check the rag joint in the steering linkage above the steering box. And, how are you checking for play? At the steering wheel or by moving the sector arm?
Rag joint was good.
Checking at the steering wheel when everything was still in the truck. Again the motor was off so don't know if that would make a difference or not?
The way the truck was all over the road I was sure to find something bad when I pulled the truck a part but nothing jumped out so thinking bad box.
I am going to use the parts truck box but would like to check this box if good or not.

I've checked plenty of them with the engine off, and have been able to tell the difference when turning the steering wheel. So I would think a bad one would show up that way for you. And I find it a lot easier to know how much play there is since there is a much more significant change at the end of the slack with the engine off.
But, perhaps it is a combination of the various things? Bad box, frozen king pins, etc?
When I check the steering 2 times nothing jumped out as bad.
Tie rods are tight both on & off the truck.
Rag joint good.
I did not look closely at kingpins when I got them apart but did not see were they would of had play. Heck the PB Blaster would not drip thru them so a sign they did not have play.
May be the frozen pins was the cause? I will check that box closer just to make sure.
Thanks

Don't forget toe. My still had a bunch of drifting after king pins, pivot and radius arm bushing replacements. Much less but enough until that was addressed.
