Hey guys I have an 86 f150 with 44 swampers on it. My brakes seem to have gotten weak it seems and I think it's time for an upgrade to get me some more stopping power. Which upgrade do y'all think will give me more bang for the buck? Hydro boost or rear discs?
I also have an early bronco and most on those forums have said both together we're overkill. Of course a eb is smaller than a full size truck so that may not be the case.
Of those two options I'd think hydro boost would help more. Rear brakes don't contribute nearly as much as front brakes, so anything that only improves the rear brakes won't have as much impact as something that improves the front.
But I think your best improvement would be from upsizing your front brakes. Keeping in mind that brakes apply torque to the hub and a 44" tire is about a 50% longer lever than the stock ~29" tire (three halves as tall), you effectively made your brakes only 2/3 as strong as they used to be. I'm not sure what's available for an F-150, but there are probably aftermarket brake upgrades (bigger or more pistons, better cooling, etc). Or upgrade to a 1 ton axle with 1 ton brakes.
Thanks, I hadn't considered that. That would probably be cheaper and easier. I have a Dana 44 straight axle out of a 77 model so I should have more options than the ifs set up. The Dana 44 under my eb has been fitted with old thunderbird calipers with bigger Pistons. That may work on this axle too. Any other suggestions for the Dana 44?
