Guys,
The pickup im working on is a 1978 ford f150 camper special with a 400, 4 speed 4wd. 370k miles on it about 70k on this motor. Im pretty sure its the stock carb possible a motorcraft 2150 2 bbl.
Im working on my dads old 78 ford f150 i replaced the gas tank(with a plastic one) because the old one was full of rust, cleaned out the lines the best i could and put a new fuel pump and filter on it. Anyways it had been sitting for about 6ish years. I fired it up the other day and have been driving it some and it seems to load up some at an idle. It loads up really bad when im driving it unless Im accelerating or off the throttle completely, but just cruising along it chugs and sputters. Seems like its getting worse instead of better.
The automatic choke is releasing all the way and it idles at about 900 rpm.
Just looking for a little advice on what rout to take.(keep in mind im not great with carbs haha)
I figured that is what you would say haha. I will have to do that, or would i be better off buying a reman? At napa they want 125 for the rebuild kit or 250 for a reman.
Sounds like somebody looked at something wrong. I just rebuilt my 2150 a couple of weeks ago and paid less than $20 for the complete kit. If you don't have a good car/parts cleaner get a gallon can that you can soak everything in overnight. It makes a huge difference.
Agree rebuilding carbs is easy... if you do it often enough to be good at it and know what to watch out for. Also if the core is good and completely intact.
I don't it often enough and buy reman. An Autoline brand reman from AZ got the 400 on my '78 F250 running well.
My situation was roughly similar... truck had sat and had a bad tank and the 35 YO original carb was gummed up.
A good idea would be to check all vacuum hoses and connections first. My 390 was running like dog crap, stumbling, and backfiring. Had an open line and a cracked line, fixed them now it runs awesome. . While I don't doubt that your carb might need rebuilt it's worth looking at the lines first.
