Hi All You Truck People,
I have a 66 f100 TWD with manual steering. I want to purchase an after market conversion that I can install without changing the steering column and will fit on my 352. There are several on the market that claim to be a quick convert, but they all say that. I'm sure there are a few of you who have done this swap, so, maybe you would be kind enough to "steer" me in the right direction. I don't think I want to go modifying to much, but I can if I have to.
The first thing is, What Co. do I look at. 2nd the price. I've seen some on ebay that sell for 500-700 dollars, which seems reasonable. I've thought about trying to find the whole thing off of a donor truck but, If you don't rebuild it all, you don't know what you have. Also if anyone can tell me which ones not to purchase would be great too.
Summers coming! Thanks, Brepei.
Brepei - first question for you is: Is your truck a 4 speed, three on the tree, or automatic? Four speeds are much easier to convert. Secondly, although you make a good point about questionable parts truck assets, the advantages outweigh the disadvantages (assuming the parts truck has not already been cannibalized) in that, if you get the right truck (approx '70 - '76 with FE engine and the type of transmission you either have or want to change to) you will have all the hard to find pump and reservoir mounting hardware, P/S gearbox, and other bits. You can inspect them, and if they work you're ahead of the game. If they're knackered you can use them for exchange. Power steering was not available in F100s until during the '66 model year. The P/S gearbox they initially installed (Eaton, I think) was prone to leaking and was replaced during the '69 model year with a Ford/Saginaw gearbox. The difference for installation is that the early (leaker) gearbox used the same length steering shaft as M/S, whereas the later gearbox requires a shorter steering shaft. As JoWilker likes to point out, if there are other projects you might want to include in the future, like power disc brakes or a transmission change, the parts truck can provide those parts, too, and you can sell the remains and cut costs. Good luck with your project.
I probably have what you need, all rebuilt and dyno tested gearbox pump and some brackets, I was originally going to put it on my 66 but I decided to put a cv front suspension under it. You will need the lines but everything else is there

I used a 2003, I picked up the entire unit for less than $300. I'm not sure of the actual dimensions of the 2008, I have seen others on different trucks so it may just be different mods that have to be done. Sorry I didn't answer your question but if you look long enough on this site I'm sure you'll find it. Good luck with your project.
