New truck new problems

Ok all question, new truck
2005 Expedition XLT 2wd 204k 5.4l 3v 4r75e

The issue

When I take it out of park every gear is neutral it has nothing in any selected gear no reverse drive second or first. Nothing if shifted manually nothing at all it will only Rev. The guy I bought it from just changed fluid and filter hoping for a change and nothing.

What could be causing this. It seems very odd it won't have anything out of park.

Unless the shift cable is broken (unlikely since you say you're able to shift out of park), then most likely bad transmission. What can fail which gives you a "dead" transmission? Many things, oil pump perhaps, or it may be something else. In most cases, it means you need to get a rebuilt transmission and swap it out.

I figured the pump went out, I'm glad it's a common trans.

Fortunately is 2WD and you don't have a transfer case to deal with.

I have found a 4x4 trans, will it work in a 2wd application? What would need to be changed if anything

The outputs are different since one takes a driveshaft and one bolts to a transfer case.

I do believe it's possible to convert it, i.e. swap over the output "neck" or whatever they call it. But not sure how much is involved in doing it, and if it includes opening the whole transmission. A factory shop manual would be able to give an answer to that if you study the blown out diagram of the 2wd vs 4wd transmission. A deal breaker would be if the output shaft is different and if that has to be taken out through the front of the transmission...
