Transmission issues help!!!

I have a 99 Expedition 5.4, 4x4, 177,000 miles. When sitting with the truck in drive, it will shift into neutral on its own and then back into gear. It will not pull a hill at all shifts into neutral. Flat ground it does alright shifts kinda of funny but nothing real bad. Sometimes, not all the time when shifting to reverse or drive, engine will idle down real low and then die. No o/d light flashing, no check engine light on. Transmission fluid clean, no burnt smell to the fluid, fliter and fluid is less than a year old. New neutral safety switch, new solenoid pack with no change in the issues. Please help, I am at a total loss on what to do or where to even look at this point!

I hate to oversimplify a solution, but have you tried readjusting the shift cable a hair tighter? It's possible that when you shift into drive, you're actually ending up between drive and neutral down on the tranny.

Hey thanks for the reply, linkage is good. The truck does this in D,2,and 1. On a hill or small incline it will not go into gear at all, however flat ground it goes into gear. It just seems like something is holding it back, give it a lot of gas and it moves real slow!!!???? I don't know what to do. I do have a question if any one knows, is it possible for the transmission filter to cause a problem like this?? I noticed the last time I had the pan off that the filter, where it is seamed together along the side of it, it is split open probably about 3/4 of an inch wide by about 2 inches long. I know, I know just replace it, its only 19 bucks, but I feel like a parts changer already!!! I really want to get to the bottom of this!

What about the fluid level? Have you checked it?

Otherwise it sounds like slipping clutches.

Clutches slip, if it is terminal it sounds more like the pump. Worth it to make a trip to a tranny shop for a free diagnosis.

Slipping clutch packs cause great amounts of heat and burn the fluid almost instantly. This leads to dark burnt smelling fluid, something not reported, and something that doesnt usually happen with low pump pressure

In either of the above cases, it is trans rebuild time.

Thumbs up

Problem solved!!!!!! Thanks to everyone for the advice! Turns out the filter was the problem, I never would have imagined that a filter would cause a transmission to do what mine was doing, changed it earlier and it fixed everything. Thanks to Mark Kovalsky once again, the transmission guru!
