Ah, that explains it. Still seems poorly thought out though.
Thanks Abe.

I'm sure Henry thought you were lucky to have a left side door at all, let alone a lock cylinder. 30 years earlier, you had no choice but to enter from the right.

I assume my dual spare tire holders are my late grandfather's handiwork, as are many of the other mods. They seem practical and I don't mind their looks either.

It's a solid looking truck Chris, the passenger door handle isn't even sagging. Awesome heritage too!

Maybe that is how they did it from the factory? Got some big hefty employee out the back, handed him a hammer and said: "Bill Smith wants option X"

Remember back in the 40's and 50's trucks were for working, hauling, and making delivers.

Actually, almost all cars of the era that had only one lock had them on the passenger side. The logic was simple - when you park next to the curb, you locked the driver's door from the inside and slid across the bench seat to the safety of the curb and locked the exterior door from the safety of the curb. Streets were often much narrower back then.

Today, it's not the width of the streets, it's the crazy drivers!

If I ever wanted a fender mounted spare, I'd put it on the passenger side every time and twice on Sunday to minimize my exposure to the road.

But mine is underneath like original, except I adapted a modern winch style retainer. I slip a speed wrench into a hole in the panel under the tail gate and lower the spare. It's not as 'clean' as doing it from the fender, but it beats unscrewing the original!!
