1989 F-250 Trans Question

Hello to everyone,
Ok I am fairly new to fords, and very new to automatic's, so please take it easy on me. I have what I think is a Overdrive transmission as the shift indicator has a black D with the solid white oval and a separate next to it that the D is white, then the number one for first. Anyway what I am inquiring about is no matter what speed I am going, when I take my foot off the accelerator, it's like I dropped an anchor from a battleship. It will slow down like right now all the way down to walking speed. The engine is a 5.0 EFI. it has dual tanks and standard 16" tires. I will add that this truck sat for a long time and only driven a handful of times the 5 years before I got it. Is this slow down normal for this truck, or is there some thing I should be looking at that I know nothing about? Pease help as I wold like to use this as a D/D. Thank you ahead of time. And yes I searched the threads for two days and could not find this problem....

The shifter pattern suggests an AOD trans which is an all mechanical auto with overdrive, find the trans and axle codes on the drivers door pillar and post them up.
When you say the truck slows down does the trans disengage or seem to go into neutral?
Can you verify that the brakes aren't dragging?

Thank you for replying. Ok if I have this deciphered correctly the Trans code is "T", the axle is a "B5", and the spring is a "D39". No I don't think it disengages or slip into neutral as you can step on the accelerator and it will speed right back up again. but it seems to do all accelerating laboriously, meaning it seems to be screaming and slowly picking up speed. I checked the fluid and it is at the full mark and is a clear red color. As far as I know it has only had Ford type trans fluid put in it. As far as servicing goes, I would think it was last serviced, (trans. serviced) by the dealer before my brother- in- law bought it, if then. He was not really into much more than adding fluids to vehicles as long as they got him from here to there, unfortunately. I do plan on changing the filter and putting new fluid in it, but am on a fixed budget, and if there's something wrong with it where I have to change it, don't want to throw the money away.

If you shift the trans into neutral once up to speed does the truck still slow right down? If so then the trans isn't the issue you have problems with the brakes.

Another thought, when stopped on a slight grade with the engine off and the trans in neutral will the truck roll? If yes when you start the engine will the truck still roll? If not does the brake pedal move on it's own when the engine is started? If it does the brake booster is faulty.

OK thank you. It does slow down almost as fast. There is no dragging sound and after a run as far as 10 to 15 miles long the drums are not hot as they should be if they were dragging. Telling heat by hand as I don't have an infrared temp gauge available.

Ok, I'll check this rolling check for the booster, brake drag. Slight hill right here at the house. Thank you again.

well the truck rolls OK when the engine is off and no when started the pedal does not drop at all. Just don't understand what is going on with this thing. Actually the brakes are very touchy. Guess I'm used to my Miata brakes. Very adequate for the size, just not touchy like the truck...
