Is there a way to test the carburetor? I have a 85' f350 with a 460. Last week it was running perfect when I parked it. Today I can't get it to start. When I pour gas in the carb, it tries to turn over, but dies instantly. I checked my fuel line, and i'm definitely getting gas to the carb.
A tablespoon of fuel poured down the throat, the engine should start for sure, and run for several seconds. Since it doesn't it's likely something else is going on. Careful pouring raw fuel like this, or repeating it more than once, you want to avoid a carb backfire. Keep an extinguisher close by when doing this kind of thing.
I would say a carburetor is so simple while it may not necessarily run very well they won't usually fail suddenly. If it hasn't had a kit thrown at it in more than a few years, you'd probably want to do that though.
Ok after reading your response, I'm not thinking it's my carb. My truck was running perfect last week. And today when I poured fuel down the throat, it did try to turn over, but died instantly. It never started.
Don't pour too much? Three things to run - air, fuel, fire. It kinda sounds like you've eliminated one. Pull a plug boot and install an extra spark plug and ground it. Have an assistant turn the motor over. Look for a bright blue spark that snaps in the air.
Don't abuse the starter while trying to start, let it rest and put the battery on a charger till things get sorted out.
