Motor swap

68 f850 with a 477 c.i is it possible to replace the motor with a cat 3208? If so will it bolt up with no fuss or will it be quite an undertaking? If not a 3208 maybe some other type/size of diesel motor would be a bettr fit. Any help would be great, thanks

I'd go with "quite an undertaking" for $10,000.

Trans, gearing maybe, fuel system, mounts, cooling, exhaust.

Not much if anything is going to "bolt up".

I say trans and gearing as the Cat is going to operate at lower RPM, maybe as much as 1000 rpm lower than the gas motor in general running.

Some comments here about a swap, and more:

3208 wouldnt bolt up, but would fit nicely.

Motor mounts from the sd engine would probably easily adapt to the 3208. Need an od trans and some gears for the rear. Drivelines.

It's certainly been done before, get the whole donor truck if possible.

If the OP can find a good running diesel F8000 or similar, he should just run that and sell that 477 truck..... jmo....

Or do a cab swap or whatever to make it serviceable.

I know this is a Ford site, but there are many fine trucks in that class made by others that will provide many years of service without trying to reinvent, re-engineer etc.

Is your job moving material, or is it working on the truck?

About 20 years ago man had 80s 600/8.2 cab fire. Found best and easiest way was to find 80s F6/700/8.2 and replace complete cab.

Yes, yes, the easy answer is always just find another truck. Guy asked what it would take. Tried to answer..

Maybe he likes driving around in the 68. I know I do!

3208 yes, Detroit 8.2.....no way.
The 3208s were in the 80s trucks, so that's where you need to swipe the parts from. Finding a turbo version will pay off in power and fuel economy. You can hop up the power on those pretty good too.
