I've owned a 2000 7.3 and currently have a 2003 7.3.
The 2000 had the forged rod motor, which the guys building big power seem to covet. I sold that one with about 250K miles. Great truck, but interior was getting a little worn and I wanted to build another one.
I'll vote for the 03 but they are tough to find with the 7.3L. As a result expect a premium price.
I really like the steering wheel stereo/AC controls, Homelink garage opener, adjustable pedals, better dash AC controls of the 03 over the 00.
All that said, there are 6.0's that can be had at a big discount due to their reputation if you have the $ and the patience. I won't ever own one. . .
The V-10, especially a newer 04-05 would be a great option for intermittant use.
Well this is a loaded question... as many have said the best is the one they drive. I started out seeking a 7.3 but quickly found I couldn't justify the price many are asking for the 7.3.
The biggest issue is how are you going to use it? Daily driver to haul the family or just to tow the boat a couple times a year?
Honestly I wouldn't look at a V10 if it wasn't and 05 & I wouldn't buy any other PSD unless it was the 7.3. Anything else would feel like a compromise.
In all seriousness not much changes between the trucks overall, it comes down to your preference on engine's really. I'm on my third V10 Ex and love them all.
Thanks for all the replies guys. I did some maintenance on my 7.3 such as brakes, alternator, fuel bowl O-rings etc. I am not a mechanic by any means but I don't mind tackling the minor things. It is crazy how much more the 7.3's are in price. It is not going to be a daily driver. I will be towing my boat during the summer and driving it on hunting trips. I honestly don't think I want the V10 after owning several diesels. I plan to keep this vehicle for a long time.

Intermittent use?, I'm not sure what that qualifier here would mean, are you saying that a gasser isn't fit for normal daily driver use?

Just my 2cents.
Why only an '05 V-10, nothing changed with that motor or trans from the previous 2 years. I can understand buying an '05 for the facelift and just because it's newer, that was my reasoning with mine.
Oh, and you guys need to adjust your computer monitors, the best color is obviously Aspen Green!
This is why I went with the V-10! I specifically wanted a 05 Ex diesel! But when I started researching the 6.0 diesel and heard about it's issues I decided to stay away from it! So I went with the V-10 instead.
Same here. My V-10 easily pulls my classic cars around on my 20 foot trailer. Im happy. I still would like a diesel some day but not with diesel fuel so much higher in my area..... guess I will stay with the V-10
