Most auto parts stores sell add on tachs for about $30. All you have to do it run the wires through the firewall and connect it. Power source you can hook up to a fuse that can handle the extra amperage, ground, and the other hooks up to the ignition coil.

Shouldn't take long to install

Counts the number of sparks the ignition coil sends out and converts it to rpm

For what it's worth I have always had good luck with AutoMeter/Autogage instruments. I wanted a 4000 rpm tach to have a larger gauge sweep, but I had this 6000 rpm in my parts stash so that's what it got for now.

Wiring is simple following the included diagram (or above post), I have mine to a keyed power source and ran the lighting wire to the dash light fuse and it dims along with the rest of the gauges.

It's getting closer to spring and car shop/swap meet season. Have a shopping list and hit "The Man Mall".

A couple of years ago I picked up an Autometer Sport Comp tach for $20... it retails for $120. Serendipity.

AutoMeter Sport-Comp Series Tachometers 3780 - Free Shipping on Orders Over $99 at Summit Racing
This is the one we used. My dad didn't want a 5" Monster, plus we didn't know where we were going to put it. We mounted this one to the steering column much like the pictures above. The Autometer also comes with different colors for the bulb in the tach so we matched the green glow of the dash lights. Also, there is a bullet connector under the dash on the left side of the column that will power the white wire for lights.

We hooked the RPM tigger wire up to a 6AL box. That's why we wanted one with a limiter pointer.
