Guys, going to attempt the rebuild of the front end on the 1950 Mercury M-68 (Ford F3 equivalent). Any info would be greatly appreciated on the following:
1, brake drum removal (do those 3 slot screws come out first. I tried to remove them with a impact screwdriver and hammer and it broke the bit)?
2, are the shocks the same as the 1/2 tons?
3, are the tie rods the same as a 1/2 ton? by the way they are just spinning so was thinking of cutting them off
4, removal of the kingpins
Thanks, pb
Just rebuilt my F2 front end and brakes.
1.Yes, the 3 screws allow you to remove the brake drums. Lots of penetrating oil over several days and the impact screw driver will get the job done. Try a little heat if you still have a problem
2. Shocks are the same.
3. Tie Rod is the same
4. King pins are held in by a tapered pin on the back side remove the nut and drive the tapered pin out. Then drive the king pin out from the bottom.Order a king pin set and you'll have everything you'll need for the rebuild.
Good Luck
