how do i get the king pins out of my front end??
got it all torn down but the king pins wont come out.
had to drill out the bolt that holds the king pins in place.
but it wont move any.
If I remember correctly, the bolt that holds the king pin in is also a
pin that keeps it from moving/rotating in sidethe axle. If it is completely drilled out you should be able to hit the pin on the bottom end of the spindle and it will come right out. You will need to take your spindles and new pins/bushings to a machine shop to have them pressed in and reamed properly. Cost me about $35.

Swanny,
That "bolt" is a tapered/slotted pin with a threaded stud on one end. I'm kinda concerned that you drilled it since the threaded stud end is smaller than the non-threaded end. Drilling a smaller hole through it will leave some of the pin still in the tapered hole. Drilling a larger hole will remove material from the axle on the smaller diameter end of the hole for the pin.
If the pin were undrilled, the procedure would be to remove the nut and drive the tapered pin out toward the non-threaded (big) end. With it drilled, can you still drive the pin out or did you already get it all out? If you didn't get it out, it has to come out - all of it - before you'll be able to get the king pin to move. If you do have it all out, follow the advice in the previous post to remove the king pin.
i drilled it out because my dad finally gave me some help and he broke the threaded part off.
so we drilled as much as we can out.
the other side is still stuck in there and wont come out.
i cleaned as much of the metal away from the king pin as i could, but it is stuck also.
dont got a torch yet, so far all of the stuck bolts broke off and i didnt need a torch.
but i think it is about time to get one.

P.S.
Earl i like your site.
it is really helpful and descriptive.
keep the site goin.
OK, the threaded part is broken off right? You need to use a punch and drive the rest of the pin through, it will pop out the back.
The part that is stuck inside the axle/king pin is NOT threaded.
It is just pressed in there. It's a pin with a groove in it and it will slide out the other end when you hit it with a hammer and punch.
Don't drill any more you might damage the axle beyond repair.
Your king pin kit should have come with a couple of these replacement pins with the nut on the end. Take a look at a new one and it will be obvious what you need to do to get the old ones out.
The king pins in my 55 were a real treat to get out. I used an air hammer to pound them out and it took forever, but they finally came out. I too am concerned that you drilled out the bolt that keeps the pin aligned, which will surely make the job harder than it already is.
First thing will be to get the old bolt out cleanly, then take an air hammer or regular hammer and punch to the king pins. It might take you the better part of the day to get them out, but once the new ones are in there youll be glad you replaced them, considering you diddnt damage your axle in the process.
Hi Swanny I work on a lot of mid sized dump trucks. I get to do about 3 to 4 of these a year. Some times they are not to bad most of the time they are nasty. The last few I just took the hole front end out and send it to the spring shop. And it comes back done. You are going to have to get the spindles reemed anyway. I don't think it cost much. You can do the work your self and you can do it. It is just going to be hard without the rite tools. I sure hope you didn't drill into that axle. That pin will come out of their just spend a little time with it and don't get upset with it. Good luck with it.
im just trying to fix my dads mistake.
he broke it and burnt a new drill of his drilling into the bolt.
i made sure he didnt damage the axle.
there is still alittle of the bolt in there and im gonna try and get it out tomarrow.
but the other bolt is also stuck and wont budge.
i wont let my old man near that one.
i told him ide wait until we got the other one out first, so i knew how it slid out.
also, are the tie rod ends screw in or do they slide in??
and is the tie rod bar suppost to be bent at all??
Tie rod ends screw into tie rod, other end slips into spindle, remove cotter pin, nut, tap out with a hammer if not going to reuse. Tie rod is supposed to be straight. Loosen clamps on tie rod ends, liberally apply penetrating oil to ends of tie rod where ends screw in, usually a slot in tie rod, can see part of threads on tie rod end, put in a vise or hold with pipe wrench, unscrew ends. Might let penetratimg oil soak couple days. Should be able straighten tie rod if not to badly bent. Good luck! Hope you have a happy new year.
thanks BELLM.
the ends are in there good also and the rod isnt bent real bad.
i didnt know if they was made like that.
have a safe and happy newy ear also, everyone.
Swanny, I believe the tie rod is bent a little because you have a right side and a left side so look at the end of your tie rod ends one should have an R for right hand threads and the other one should have an L for left hand threads. If you put the tie rod on backwards you'll have a steering problem.
