Outside/back spare tire rack question

I have a question about adding this on. I have a 1994 Bronco and at some point it had an outside spare tire rack/holder on it (the back right corner has the rusted holes and broken off bolts). However, one of the previous owners replaced the tailgate. I may have found a spare tire rack on craigslist, but I'm wondering if the tailgate needs special reinforcing like the body corner needs (for the spare rack to mount to) or if it's just a matter of drilling holes and adding the catch mechanism onto the tailgate?

You will have to drill holes and there is a brace inside the tailgate which the latch bolts to. I have the entire functioning setup just removed from my '95 if you are interested PM me.

This is the brace that goes inside the tailgate. The latch part is bolted to it

Here's the rest...one stud is broken but still reaches through my steel spare wheel just fine.

Okay men, I haven't yet seen my "new" spare tire carrier, but I have purchased it (Craigslist find) and in the mean time, I figured I'd prep the area.

First issue: the corner where it mounts (see pictures below).

Previous owner left me some gifts. As you can see, I sprayed some WD40 on the holes and I'm going to take my first crack at them tomorrow. Any tips or tricks? The only thing I can think of is to drill them out. Does that sound doable? Is there something else I should do?

Second issue I'm going to work on: the tailgate is a replacement. Thought I'd sand it down and paint it the same color as the rest of it. I start looking at it tonight and notice this:

Obviously it wasn't this noticeable until I started poking at it and revealed the mess. The area in question is 8-10 inches long, right at the bottom of the center of the tailgate. It is bubbled up in several spots and after a little bit of sanding, I noticed it and started peeling some of it back (which gives me the pictures you see above).

I'm not looking to make this thing showroom quality. I just want it to look decent when I'm finished. Thoughts...?

Cut it out and weld in a patch panel. Or get a junkyard tailgate in better condition

It is possible to drill the broken off bolts out. Keep spraying pb blaster or some kind of penetranr on them for a few days. Also you should go get a left hand twist drill bit and use it. You just might luck out and some of them back out using it. There is also a new kind of easy out I dont remember what they are called but they work better than the old style. Patience and preparation pays off.

Woohoo...it's always something isn't it? I mean, that is kind of a recurring saying I have over the last few years ("If it's not one thing it's another"), but after today, I am now in need of a new tailgate glass. I'm going to look around for a new tailgate without the rusted out bottom.

Did the torsion bar let go and shatter it?

There is a patch panel available to repair the bottom section if you are up to it. If you remove the taillight you can get to the backside of those bolts. You may be able to weld a nut on to get them cracked loose. Either way I see several problem which may need welding

As far as the glass goes, no, it was user error. Ugh...

I started attempting to drill the bolts out last night...I say attempting because it wasn't working that well. I think my drill may be underpowered. Out of the four bolt holes at the top of the bracket (where it will go), only one is currently occupied with a rusty nub. Three of the bottom four holes have the PO's gift to me still in there. I got two drilled out and I'm hoping to get the others done this weekend. Seems like life always has something else that needs to be done though. Between work, kids' practices, family, the weather...

I need help. I recently purchased a spare tire carrier off Craigslist and I got everything except the bracket that goes inside the tailgate. What do I do? Where can I find one of these?

The rust on the tailgate might not have noticeable from the back but I can almost guarantee that if you put/ran your hand along the bottom of the tailgate at the panel seam that it would have been swollen from the rust. I'd check the rest of that bottom edge to see how bad it is. Same with top of the rear quarter panels at the wheel well

Yeah, the tailgate has the usual rust it seems, but after spending my morning in a salvage yard with two older Broncos, mine isn't too bad. I spent the morning taking off my first top to get to the tailgate that had my new back glass and while I was there, I found the bracket I needed for my new spare tire carrier. My first trip to the salvage yard was a lot of work, but it was worth it. $40 bucks for glass and the bracket is a hell of deal in my opinion!!!
